The National Junior Honor Society is a national organization that was established in 1929. The society was formed to recognize outstanding students in the middle grades. It is estimated that more than one million students participate in both the National Junior Honor Society and the National Honor Society. Chapters are found in all 50 states. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but also challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.
Following the first term of the school year, 7th and 8th grade students, who have demonstrated the quality of scholarship by maintaining a 90% or higher GPA in middle school, will be invited to apply for membership to the NJHS. Following the invitation to apply, students will need to complete an application portfolio in which they will share how they exhibit qualities of leadership, service, character, and citizenship.
Members are selected by the Faculty Council. Along with the NJHS advisers, the council is appointed by the school principal, and a majority vote of the faculty council is needed for selection. Students must complete all sections of the application portfolio, carefully follow all directions, and submit the application prior to the deadline in order to be considered for membership. The selection process concludes with induction into the John J. Ahern Middle School Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society.
Our hope is that membership in the NJHS will help to foster students’ commitment to lifelong learning and service – that they will continue to explore new interests, learn new skills, and continue to find the joy, the excitement, and the reward in learning while providing a service to the community.
